Ryan’s positive journey lighting up Dundee
When Ryan Hopkins first heard about Street Soccer programmes at the Change Centre, he believed that giving football another crack would help keep him busy
Street Soccer Scotland hosted its inaugural Street Soccer Nations Cup Tournament at the Change Centre in Dundee. Welcoming teams from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Netherlands and select squads from Afghanistan and Ukraine, the tournament was used to promote the power of sport and to challenge stigma.
The event is an opportunity for players from Street Football projects across the globe to represent their country in our inaugural small-sided tournament. For many, this experience may be life-changing and will highlight the power that sport has to influence and make tangible, positive change. By hosting this event in Scotland, we are also able to showcase the impact that football programmes, such as ours, can have in communities across the world.
The hurdles that our players face are shared by many across the globe. We believe that by uniting, coming together and sharing these experiences, we can offer connection, hope, happiness and build self-belief.
The societal issues that Dundee has faced in recent years have been well documented. Through the Nations Cup and the programme of events wrapped around the event, we aim to highlight the positive actions being taken by partners across the city and further afield, underlining how the power of community (and football) can be part of the solution in creating change.
We thank everyone who was part of the Nations Cup and we can’t wait to meet you all again soon!
