Sophie's Story

Sophie, a year older and a year wiser returned to Street Soccer Scotland straight after playing in the Homeless World Cup was in Glasgow in 2016.

This year Sophie was appointed assistant coach the women’s team and trained with them twice a week for several months before coming to Oslo. But the night before leaving for Norway, the team received some devastating news, Mandy the women’s team manager broke her ribs and was unable to fly. Sophie had a decision to make. Sophie chose yet again to fight!

Arriving in Norway, Sophie has demonstrated leadership skills way beyond her 21 years, operating in an intense and often fraught situation as the team came back from behind several times and won games on penalties. Looking back now I don't know how I did it, but lifting the women's Fretex plate made everything worth it. Mandy was always on the phone for me whenever I needed her & knowing she was watching all our matches made me more determined to coach the team to victory.

The tournament was life changing for me. Meeting so many countries, especially those from Africa really made me see all the opportunities we have here in the UK. It made me humbled.
