Team Scotland heading to the States for Homeless World Cup 2023

Street Soccer Scotland players will be heading to the United States of America, with Team Scotland now officially part of the Homeless World Cup in Sacramento in July 2023.

The Homeless World Cup is an annual international football tournament that aims to end homelessness by inspiring people who are experiencing it to change their lives through football. The tournament brings together teams of people who have experienced homelessness from all over the world to compete and represent their countries.

Street Soccer Scotland has been a long-standing participant in the Homeless World Cup and has been representing Scotland for many years. Winners in 2007 and 2011, Team Scotland will be part of the first Homeless World Cup on North American soil, with Street Soccer Scotland providing coaching, support, and guidance to the players who will represent Scotland in the tournament.

The tournament will take place from Saturday 8th July – Saturday 15th July 2023 at California State University, Sacramento as well as the venue for the games, the university will also accommodate the visiting countries from across the globe and their players on campus.

Founder and CEO of Street Soccer Scotland, David Duke, expressed his excitement about the upcoming competition, saying, “We are delighted continue as Team Scotland’s official partner for the Homeless World Cup in 2023. We have been working hard over the years to promote the positive impact that football can have on people’s lives, and this opportunity is really special for our players.

Recent years have of course been challenging and it is great to see the return of the tournament in Sacramento. For this year, Team Scotland will comprise of a men’s team only, with special news on our women’s team announced in due course.”

The Homeless World Cup provides an opportunity for Street Soccer Scotland to demonstrate the impact of their work and to showcase the potential of football as a tool for social change. It will also allow the organisation to expand its reach and impact, both in Scotland and around the world.

Players will be selected through a trial process that will take place over the coming weeks across Scotland. Those that meet the selection criteria will be supported by Street Soccer staff throughout, with preparations in place to work towards this summer’s tournament.

The Homeless World Cup in Sacramento in July 2023 will be the first tournament since 2019 and will take place at Sacramento State University. Team Scotland will be looking to make a mark and inspire others to use football as a tool for social change. As the tournament approaches, Street Soccer Scotland will be working hard to prepare the players for the competition, with personal development and one-to-one support provided to each and every player. Through our participation, we hope to continue to promote the positive impact of football on individuals and communities.
